About Us
By mobilizing the power of volunteers, CASN provides transportation, meal stipends, accommodations, childcare assistance, and compassionate care to people seeking abortion services in Houston.
We believe that everyone deserves access to reproductive healthcare, regardless of income, socioeconomic status, living situation, race, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
We understand that one's legal right to have an abortion is meaningless without real access, and that a lack of transportation often presents a barrier to accessing the abortion one needs.
CASN History
2013: Beginning
CASN was founded in the wake of HB-2, a law that put onerous restrictions on Texas abortion clinics, leading many to close. Our founder realized this when she coordinated a ride to an abortion clinic from an anonymous Facebook post; closed clinics meant that people had to travel further and further to access abortion care. Soon after that first drive, the organization put together a committed group of ten volunteers and completed about 80 drives.
2016 - 2018: Growth
After the election, we saw a surge in interest and need in CASN's services (we had 1187 scheduled drives in 2017, and 1511 scheduled drives in 2018!). This pushed us to formalize our processes, amp up our training and security, and secure grant funding for our very first employee.
2019-2020: Iteration
To better reflect our values as a grassroots, volunteer run organization, CASN transitioned to a collective leadership model. We also launched the CASN Driver App, a winner of the Houston Hackathon.
